# Who pays the fee

> Deduct the fee from what you receive, or add it to the price

Each service has a `fee_bearer`, and each payment can override it.

| `fee_bearer` | Your customer pays | You receive |
| - | - | - |
| `merchant` (default) | The value of the goods | The value **minus** the fee |
| `customer` | The value **plus** the fee | The value of the goods |

## Example: 1,000 XAF with MTN Cameroon

Suppose your all-in price for MTN Cameroon is 3.25 % (your real price is in `fee` and in `POST /mobile-money/quote`).

| | `merchant` | `customer` |
| - | - | - |
| Your customer pays | **1,000 XAF** | **1,033 XAF** |
| Fee | 33 XAF, deducted | 33 XAF, added |
| You receive | **967 XAF** | **1,000 XAF** |

## Why 1,033 and not 1,032.50?

The fee is a percentage of **what the customer pays**, not of the value of your goods. With `customer`, we compute the **smallest amount** that leaves you at least the full value, after rounding to the operator's decimals and including fixed fees. 1,032 XAF would leave you 999 XAF; 1,033 XAF leaves you 1,000.

> [!TIP]
>
> Show the exact amount before your customer confirms: call [`POST /mobile-money/quote`](https://docs.kemypay.com/api-reference/collections/quote) with `fee_bearer: "customer"` and display `customer_pays`.

## Change it

* For the service: [`PATCH /services/{code}`](https://docs.kemypay.com/api-reference/services/update) with `fee_bearer`. No new review.
* For one payment: send `fee_bearer` with [`POST /mobile-money/collections`](https://docs.kemypay.com/api-reference/collections/create).
